Oliver Taylor Wears The Baja Classic
Q: What does a typical day in the life look like for you?
A: As chaotic as my life is I’ve developed a seven step morning routine to get me going, it starts with water, yoga, meditation, and a green smoothie. I usually warm up and practice for an hour or two and then get into whatever the day has in store for me.
Q: What are you passionate about?
A: Art! I believe art makes the world go round. It keeps our souls fed and allows us to overcome. It brings us together and gives us an idea of what being human is really about.... Don’t even get me started.
Q: How did you get started playing music for a living?
A: It was a gradual takeover of my life. Haha. I never thought about it too hard until much later. I started playing trumpet in 4th grade and music just kinda grabbed a hold of me and never let go. When I realized I didn’t want to do anything else, that was when I got serious about being a professional musician.
Q: Have you faced adversity in your life or career? What have you learned from that?
A: Adversity comes in many forms but for me, identity issues from growing up Black in an affluent, predominantly all white community haunted me for years. Facing these issues head on taught me not to oversimplify things that you may find difficult to understand, and to know, and love yourself so deeply that you offend anyone that doesn’t.
Q: What are some things that you are grateful for?
A: I’m grateful to be here at all. I’m grateful for my friends and family for always holding me down. I’m grateful for the gifts I’ve been given and I'm grateful for the opportunity to use them.
Q: One of our brand mottos is “Keep it Casual”. What does “Keep it Casual” mean to you in your own life?
A: For me “Keep it Casual” means sweatpants all day. It means not caring what someone else thinks because you know your dope and you don’t need to prove it.
Q: How do you stay inspired?
A: I practice open-mindedness as much as possible. Inspiration can be found anywhere if you're willing to look.
Q: Are there any publications or online journals that you venture to for inspiration?
A: I’m a big fan of Foolish Ambition, (foolishambition.com), they specialize in under 30 talent and are consistently promoting, and exploring innovative creative content.
Q: Socks or no socks?
A: Definitely socks.
Q: Do you have any plans or projects that you are looking forward to in the future?
A: Yeah I’m working on a new King Oliver Trumpet EP that’s coming out this year. I’ve also been working with some very talented musicians in a new band project. We’ll be releasing a debut project I’m really excited about this year as well.
